Biography
My name is Michael Balthasar and I graduated with a MA Chemistry at the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany in 1996. I made my PhD at the Department of Combustion Physics at the Lund University in Sweden in 2000. My thesis has the title: "Detailed Soot Modeling in Laminar and Turbulent Reactive Flow". In addition to my PostDoc in Cambridge I have also spent a year at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California at Berkeley in 2002. My research is concerned with the formation of carbonaceous particles formed during the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels. I have worked on different aspects reaching from fundamental model development to application to practical systems:
- Detailed kinetic soot modeling in laminar and turbulent flames using a flamelet
- Detailed kinetic soot modeling in Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines
- Soot Particle Ionization
- Aggregation of Soot Particles
- Stochastic Modeling of the Population Balance of Soot Particles
- Influence in Micro-mixing on Soot Formation
- Modeling the Formation of Carbon Black
I have been rewarded the following fellowships and prizes:
- Marie-Curie Fellowship of the European Union, 2003
- Feodor-Lynen Fellowship of the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation, Germany, 2001
- Junior Research Fellowship, Churchill College, Cambridge, 2001
- Fellowship of the Royal Society (UK), 2001
- Scholarship from the Nobel Prize foundation (Sweden), 1997
- Steinhofer prize from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, awarded to the top three students of the class of 1996
