Biography

JoAnn is a Professor and Chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah, located in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also a By-Fellow of Churchill College. JoAnn received her degrees from the University of Utah and has been a faculty member there since 1988. In addition to serving as chair, her administrative positions include founding Director of the Institute for Combustion and Energy Systems and Associate Dean for the College of Engineering. Her research on combustion has spanned many topics including hazardous waste incineration, contaminated soil clean up, health effects and fine particles, air pollution issues along the US/Mexico border, and mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. Her most recent work has been on experiments dealing with soot formation and oxidation and process modeling of chemical looping combustion for solid fuels.
